The art of brassware making has been practiced in India since the third century BC and most of the idols were also made of this metal. Moradabad (Uttar Pradesh) is renowned for its brass work and has carved a niche for itself in the handicraft industry throughout the world.

There are four stages for making engraved brassware: Moulding & Casting (Dhalai), Finishing & Polishing (Chilai), Engraving (Nakashi and Dastakari), Enameling (Rang Bharai). The artisan started with moulding & casting the parts & they were then finished & polished using a lathe machine and other tools. The finished parts were welded logether and polished & buffed to get the product ready for engraving.
